Translation procedures in secondary term formation across languages in online glossaries: Universal or language-specific?

Abstract Online terminological glossaries may play a key role in translating and disseminating terms multiple languages, especially those highly specialized domains where no other sources are available. The influence of English as lingua franca is undeniable the process shaping target language terminologies. purpose this paper to explore types secondary term formation related translation procedures reflected online domain start-up companies find out whether they universal or language-specific. study investigates 28 five languages with total 1,566 terms. It hypothesised that contact-based considerable significantly more frequent than interpretative little such influence. also proposed among transference highest occurrence. According third hypothesis, differ their preference for various procedures. Statistical tests have confirmed all three hypotheses. In addition, our findings shed light on lexical gaps under investigation.
